The passing of Aretha Franklin is an emotional experience for her family, friends, fans, fellow musicians and collaborators, and all who ever heard the Queen of Soul's powerful voice. All will miss her, including Philadelphia's Patti LaBelle, a woman who - as the Godmother of Soul - shared a musical and cultural heritage with Franklin.
Following Aretha Franklin's death, many record stores in the DFW area sold out of her albums. At Spinster Records, Kate Siamro said Aretha's vinyls were gone within the first hour. "There is always an Aretha record somewhere in here. So today is kind of crazy to open up the store and an hour into it, just be completely out," she said.
Award-winning producer Jamar Jones recently released his first ever solo project Fatherless Child. Recorded under Patti LaBelle's imprint GPE Record, the album is a collection of compositions put together by Jones and friends to tell his life's story. It features musical contributions from R&B artist Glenn Lewis, Montell Jordan, Vivian Green, and Patti herself.
"Her and my mom is friends. She is my number one supporter and was interested in getting out my story," said pianist Jamar Jones about living legend Patti LaBelle signing him to her label GPE Records. "She encouraged me. She's also on the album...she goes on an emotional roller-coaster.
